This article examines the context in which Joseph Beuys’s work Wirtschaftswerte was created over time by researching the method of production, the meaning of the foodstuffs, and the techniques that the artist used. Draw¬ing on the development of new conservation strategies of modern and contemporary art, where the focal point has shifted from mate¬rial to immaterial aspects, and by introduc¬ing food-preservation techniques into the decision-making process, the article presents the concept of a material and conceptual conservation strategy for ephemeral works of art. The aim of this essay is to reexamine the strategies and methods of traditional art conservation in the light of new strategies that have been used for temporary works of art, and to present a methodology that offers a framework to manage the specific prob¬lems linked to the conservation of ephemeral works of art

The role of science in contemporary art conservation : a study into the conservation and presentation of food-based art

The conservation of contemporary food-based art appeared to be problematic. Due to the perishable nature, long-term preservation and short-term exposition periods can be problematic in terms of food deterioration and loss of sensorial properties (visual appearance, smell, texture). For instance, for contemporary food-based art the decay processes of the food materials are often intrinsic to the meaning of the artwork. Because of the perishable nature of the food, sometimes, they need to be recreated. In both cases (preservation and recreation), food preservation methods, applied in the food industry, and knowledge on food science offer art conservators more possibilities to develop a suitable conservation strategy. Throughout this PhD research the role of science in the context of conservation of contemporary food-based art was investigated, with a primary emphasis on applicability and sustainability in a museum context. By introducing the knowledge of food science, the deterioration mechanisms of food in art became clear and compatible treatment options were given

MAP as a conservation method for contemporary art with foodstuffs : three case studies

This article examines the use of Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), a widely applied preservation method in the food packing industry, for preserving contemporary artworks with foodstuffs. Three case studies are presented for which guidelines to preserve those works are proposed, taking into account the temporal, ephemeral character of these artworks on the one hand and their material preservation on the other hand and to explore whether and how they can be presented and preserved for future generations

Antitrust and the Future of Nursing: Federal Competition Policy and the Scope of Practice

Experiences of Being Ignored by Peers During Late Adolescence: Linkages to Psychological Maladjustment

    Get PDF
In this study on being ignored by peers, 934 twelfth-grade students reported on their experiences of being ignored, victimized, and socially withdrawn, and completed measures of friendship and psychological adjustment (depression, self-esteem, and global satisfaction). Peer nominations of being ignored, victimized, and accepted by peers were also collected. Self-reports and peer reports of being ignored were associated with the psychological outcomes, after accounting for other peer experiences and social withdrawal. The associations between the ignore variables and certain outcomes were weaker for adolescents who were highly accepted, made many friendship nominations, and received many friendship nominations. Results suggest that being ignored by schoolmates may represent a specific understudied negative group-level peer difficulty that poses significant and unique psychological risk during late adolescence

A Comprehensive Safety Trial of Chimeric Antibody 14.18 With GM-CSF, IL-2, and Isotretinoin in High-Risk Neuroblastoma Patients Following Myeloablative Therapy: Children\u27s Oncology Group Study ANBL0931

Purpose: A phase 3 randomized study (COG ANBL0032) demonstrated significantly improved outcome by adding immunotherapy with ch14.18 antibody to isotretinoin as post-consolidation therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma (NB). This study, ANBL0931, was designed to collect FDA-required safety/toxicity data to support FDA registration of ch14.18. Experimental design: Newly diagnosed high-risk NB patients who achieved at least a partial response to induction therapy and received myeloablative consolidation with stem cell rescue were enrolled to receive six courses of isotretinoin with five concomitant cycles of ch14.18 combined with GM-CSF or IL2. Ch14.18 infusion time was 10-20 h per dose. Blood was collected for cytokine analysis and its association with toxicities and outcome. Results: Of 105 patients enrolled, five patients developed protocol-defined unacceptable toxicities. The most common grade \u3e/= 3 non-hematologic toxicities of immunotherapy for cycles 1-5, respectively, were neuropathic pain (41, 28, 22, 31, 24%), hypotension (10, 17, 4, 14, 8%), allergic reactions (ARs) (3, 10, 5, 7, 2%), capillary leak syndrome (1, 4, 0, 2, 0%), and fever (21, 59, 6, 32, 5%). The 3-year event-free survival and overall survival were 67.6 +/- 4.8% and 79.1 +/- 4.2%, respectively. AR during course 1 was associated with elevated serum levels of IL-1Ra and IFNgamma, while severe hypotension during this course was associated with low IL5 and nitrate. Higher pretreatment CXCL9 level was associated with poorer event-free survival (EFS). Conclusion: This study has confirmed the significant, but manageable treatment-related toxicities of this immunotherapy and identified possible cytokine biomarkers associated with select toxicities and outcome. EFS and OS appear similar to that previously reported on ANBL0032
